John V.A. Holmes practicesf in U.S. visa and status related matters, to wit, immigration law. He is now of counsel and senior immigration lawyer in the Orlando office of Maney & Gordon, P.A.. Although the firm has clients all over the world, the principal offices are located in Tampa and Orlando, Florida, USA. John V.A. Holmes, who has been practicing law since 1965, entered the practice of immigration law in response to the growing worldwide demand for U.S. visa and status related legal services. Joyce Lien, has been Mr. Holmes's legal assistant for the past twenty eight years. She is not an attorney and does not give legal advise, but her knowledge and experience are valued not only by Mr. Holmes, but also by the many clients of the firm.

Mr. Holmes's cases and clients come from many sources. Satisfied clients are the greatest source of new business. Local attorneys, accountants, business brokers and qualified religious organizations are also a source of continuing referrals. And in recent years the internet has become more and more important in bringing the firm to the attention of possible clients living outside the U.S. who need to consult or talk with an immigration attorney. An effort is made to respond to all email from possible new clients within one day. There is no charge for answers to relatively simple questions by email. If necessary additional services are provided for reasonable, fixed fees. Thus, those who employ the firm know exactly how much the services of the firm are going to cost before the work begins and they can plan accordingly. Fees cannot be quoted, however, until a potential client's goals and options have been established through discussion.

When a potential client is unable to come to the firm's local office, these discussions are by telephone with prearranged appointments. Depending upon the circumstances, there may be a charge for these preliminary discussions, but generally there is no charge for these initial discussions. Then, in most matters, after the services to be performed have been decided upon and a fee has been established, half of the fee is paid prior to the beginning of the work (with credit for any fee paid for a consultation). The balance of the fee is payable before papers are filed with the appropriate agency of government, usually Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services (BCIS) or the US Department of State.
